Summary
- Applied Linguistics Studies: The group focuses its greatest efforts in this field on lexical availability, with studies included in the pan-Hispanic project coordinated by López Morales, as well as other research that has arisen from this project. The lexical availability materials from the island of Gran Canaria have been used to carry out various comparative and methodological studies. Different members of the team have studied the availability of ELE students and also the progress, according to age and school year, of the lexicon of Canarian primary and secondary school students. The team is working on the edition of the available lexicon of the Islands and a comparative work is planned, in real time, between the data of lexical availability of two corpora: the one elaborated 20 years ago in Gran Canaria and another one that is planned to be collected in this new stage in the same island. Some of the group's researchers are developing a series of studies on lexical richness, lexical teaching methods, motivational elements in the teaching/learning of ELE, syntactic maturity and the acquisition of complex sentence structures. The development of text production and comprehension manuals is also of interest.
- Sociolinguistic studies on Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands and its relationship with other dialect areas: This line of research includes studies on the Spanish of the Canary Islands as part of pan-Hispanic projects: that on the cultured norm of the main cities of the Hispanic world -with complementary research on the popular level of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria-, that on the island media (included in DIES-RTP), PRESEEA (Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of the Spanish of Spain and America) and the PRECAVES XXI project for the study of beliefs and attitudes towards the cultured varieties of the Spanish language. It is also worth mentioning the participation in the AMERESCO project, which has as a fundamental objective the compilation of a conversational corpus of different speech communities in Spain and America. In addition to this coordinated work with Spanish and Latin American teams, the members of the group carry out specific research on different aspects of the Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands. The group is currently working very intensively on the preparation of the PRESEEA materials for its forthcoming publication, as well as on the study of various phonic, grammatical and pragmatic-discursive aspects based on this corpus. On the other hand, as part of the PRECAVES XXI project, as well as continuing with the analyses based on the 117 surveys completed by Canarian university students, work is beginning on the results of 108 surveys compiled with a sociolinguistic distribution of the sample. The group is currently linked to the research project Agenda 2050. El español de Sevilla y Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: procesos de variación y cambio, funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (duration 2020-2024), of which the coordinator is IP2.
