Summary

- Cognition, culture and nutrition (cocunut) / cognition, culture & nutrition: Our scientific and epistemological knowledge of the genetic, molecular, and neural factors that contribute to social behavior and sociocultural activity has remarkably advanced in the past few years. Sophisticated theoretical and analitycal approaches have been enhanced by the new technology that have contributed knew knowledge on data about sociocultural foundations of cognition understood as human activity. Language is perhaps the activity that more increasing complexity has involved in the human evolution. Social cognition is a complex adaptive system involving different cognitive mechanisms. This highly interdisciplinar approach to human languages provides a necessary route to understanding the evolution of such mechanisms as framed in Nutrition.
- Physical Activity, Sedentarism and Obesity in Spanish Youth (steps): PASOS (acronym for Physical Activity, Sedentarism and Obesity in Spanish Youth) is a pioneering study whose objective is to evaluate the physical activity, sedentarism, lifestyles and obesity of Spanish children and adolescents aged 8 to 16 and their families. This initiative arises from the Gasol Foundation's commitment to the fight against childhood obesity and the need to have objective data on the level of physical activity and health of children in this age group, as well as to have scientific evidence of the association between the level of physical activity and social and lifestyle determinants. In order to carry out the project and obtain a representative sample at national level, data collection was carried out through 245 primary and secondary schools in 121 selected localities in each of the 17 autonomous communities. In total, 3,803 children participated in the study and the data collection and analysis process was made possible thanks to the collaboration of 13 research centres throughout the country. The study methodology was designed jointly by the Gasol Foundation, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) and the IUIBS-ULPGC.
