Summary
- Institutions, defensive policy and supply in the archipelagos of Macaronesia during the 16th and 17th centuries: The aim is to analyse the Castilian and Portuguese local institutions established since the 15th century in the Macaronesian archipelagos, which are, in both cases, the first example of the establishment of the Iberian administration outside the peninsular territory, and which, in turn, serve as an example for the establishment of such institutions in the non-European territories of the two crowns. In particular, the comparative method analyses two fundamental competencies within the municipal councils and chambers: defence policy and the supply of grain-deprived areas during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
- The formation of the State and its economic institutions in the 18th century. Its impact on Atlantic history: Analysis of the institutional transformations that have occurred in the field of the economy and economic institutions, especially in the transition from the Old Regime to the liberal States. It covers both the world of finance and expenditure, including the institutions in charge of relating both sections. This analysis is linked in particular to the geographical area formed by the Middle Atlantic, considering in particular the possibility of analysing the footprint generated on its historical heritage.
- Territory and society. Historical evolution of a tricontinental space (Africa, America and Europe): Systematic and comparative study of the island imagery of the islands and archipelagos of the Middle Atlantic between the 16th and 18th centuries and its impact on local societies. The importance of world history as a web of unequal political relations and interconnected processes With specificities specific to each territory, there is a common heritage that is the result of the processes of colonization suffered since the beginning of the Modern Age and its location in the formation of the capitalist world-economy and the international division of labor.
- Application of the foundations of historical nesology to the archipelagos of the Macaronesia: Methodologically, this research topic is based on historical nesology applied to the Macaronesian islands (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde) with the aim of understanding the genesis of insular identity. The analysis of the construction of the island and Atlantic imagination aims to understand the peculiar formation and organization of the Macaronesian society in the recent Early Modern Age (16th-18th centuries) from the experience acquired with the environment.
- Colonial history and ideas in America: My current interest is on the settlement and pacification policies on the Spanish-American borders. I pay attention to the ideas to evangelize and convert into Spanish subjects the most insubordinate indigenous nations such as the case of the Chichimeca and the Apaches. I have also studied within the history of ideas the discourses favorable to indigenous slavery and inequality within colonial society during the sixteenth century. I have based myself mainly on the scholastic writings of the school of Salamanca, but also on Spanish Humanism and medical theory.
