Summary
The phenomenon of environmental migrants emerged with the 1990 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, highlighting the influence of climate change on migration. Unimc's research will focus on environmental migration in the Euro-Mediterranean region, which is characterized by a large coastal population vulnerable to sea rise, erosion, drought and water scarcity. Several international bodies seek to support strategies to manage these impacts, but complex and multifaceted studies of the phenomenon are lacking. Mass migration could cause humanitarian crises and increase political tensions and conflicts. This research will investigate environmental migrations from a historical and legal perspective, their influence on economic and social policies in the region, and environmental sustainability as a curb to the phenomenon, also using Artificial Intelligence for quantitative analysis.
