Summary

- ECOFISIOLOGY OF MARINE ORGANIZES: ECOFIS: Studies of metabolism, respiration, ammonium excretion, growth, and production in marine organisms.
- Physical-biological coupling in large-scale marine ecosystems and Mesoescala: Study of the physical drivers governing the physical-biological coupling in marine ecosystems at both large and mesoscale. This research line primarily relies on the analysis of in situ and remote observational oceanographic data, as well as the development of theoretical and numerical models. As a novel aspect, animal-borne telemetry is included as a pivotal element within the range of observational measurements used for marine ecosystem monitoring.
- Planktonic Ecology and Marine Pollution: PLANKMAR: This research line focuses on investigating the ecology of plankton, the structure and dynamics of marine food webs, and their responses to anthropogenic stressors, particularly marine pollution. Planktonic organisms are key players in the functioning of marine ecosystems and global biogeochemical cycles. We use established and novel laboratory techniques, experimental and field approaches to study plankton ecology at individual, population and community levels. Our goal is to understand plankton autoecology, species interactions, and the ultimate effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors in the structure and dynamics of plankton communities and marine ecosystems.
- Enzymatic biochemistry: BIOENZIMA: Studies of the enzymatic reactions that control the ecophysiological processes of marine organisms. Studies of the biochemical regulation of physiological processes in marine organisms. Studies of the carbon and nitrogen flux in the ocean and of mathematical processes of respiration and nitrogen metabolism based on enzymological principles. Improving the biochemical technology for detecting biogeochemical processes in the sea.
- Systematic, biogeography and ecology of marine plants: PLANTAMAR: Studies of the taxonomic systematics and classification of seagrasses and marine algae with the objective of documenting the biodiversity, ecology, and the reproductive cycles of organisms in the Canary Island littoral zones. Identity of rare and commercially useful species is a priority.
- Cultivation of organisms for experimentation: CULTOREX: Cultivating marine organisms for biochemical and physiological experimentation. Investigation into the biology, Cultivation of phytoplankton, crustaceans, jellyfish and fishes.
- Study of microplastics and their influence on trophic chains: MICROTROPHIC: Study of microplastics in the marine ecosystem and their passage through the food chain.
