Summary

- Linguistics applied to the Didactics of German-Spanish translation and interpretation: This research focuses on improving the learning of translation and interpretation, and specifically investigates the metacognition of the translator and interpreter in the classroom, so it focuses on the investigation of the cognitive processes of translation and interpretation in order to create a holistic methodology that contributes to the conscious reflection and reasoning of the translator and interpreter - student about their own process. In this line two fundamental areas are studied: a) theoretical and practical reflection on human metacognition in relation to the conscious argumentative reasoning of the process of translation and interpretation, and b) empirical study of the processes of translation and interpretation and methodological development of qualitative models of analysis of said processes. - Linguistics applied to the translation of French/Spanish specialized texts and its didactics: Researcher: MARÍA DEL CARMEN FALZOI ALCÁNTARA. Our research focuses on the study of specialized legal and scientific texts, their textual, linguistic and communicative characteristics from a French-Spanish contrastive perspective, all of which is centred on improving the teaching of translation. Likewise, it seeks to deepen the influence of ICTs in the process of integrating knowledge and logical reasoning of translation learners. REFERENCES:
- Linguistics applied to media products analysis: Researcher: RUTH Z. YUSTE ALONSO. This research line focuses on the feminist analysis of media products in order to examine gender discourses and representations, alongside other intersecting categories, currently in circulation in our collective imaginary in today¿s visually mediated world. In particular, we pay special attention to how genre and stylistic conventions are used to reinforce or subvert these cultural discourses and representations. In so doing, this approach allows us not only to identify traditions, trends, and changes, but also to question the theoretical apparatus available to explore and better comprehend our ways of seeing the world around us.
- Pragmatic, discourse analysis and argumentative rhetoric: This work has mainly revolved around the concept of enthymeme, the natural inference in communication (cognition, expression, emotion), and the analysis of implicit messages. He has studied the romanesque enthymeme at a linguistic, rhetorical, and literary level in novels, particularly in the works by Michel Butor, and Gabriel García Márquez. Moreover, we have studied this device in relation to the poetic eloquence and the ineffable. Our thorough research has led to the publication of the books titled L'Enthymème. Histoire et actualité de l'inférence du discours (PUL, 2000) and Del Razonamiento a la Argumentación (Peter Lang, 2012), of which we are author and editor.
- Linguistics applied to the teaching of French language and literature: This research explores language acquisition of French and Spanish as foreign language, and language learning through images by implementing our « méthode intégrale ». We also develop techniques to foster understanding, critical thinking and communication for language, literature, and translation courses. These interests have led us to pay special attention to the role of natural inferences in the language learning/acquisition process and communication, which has resulted in the publication:
- Linguistics applied to language teaching (didactics and methodology), language and translation in the field of English for specific purposes (IFE): Researcher: MARÍA SANDRA MARRERO MORALES. Our research focuses on the study of language in the field of English for Specific Purposes. Theoretical framework considers recent path of research in the field of Applied Linguistics (English language teaching in the different fields of specialization), paying special attention to the field of medical English and those aspects related to the didactics and methodology of English for Specific Purposes. Furthermore, the specific characteristics of the specialized languages (terminology, discourse analysis, textual types, etc.) and aspects related to the translation of specialized texts will be analysed. - French and contrastive linguistics: This research explores french language and culture. We will compare this language with others languages.
- Linguistics applied to the didactics of audiovisual products analysis: Researcher: RUTH Z. YUSTE ALONSO. This research line focuses on developing media literacy skills in order to teach students in secondary and higher education to critically approach, interact with, and consume mass-media products. Every day we are exposed to a wide range of media content, yet we rarely reflect upon the impact these artifacts have on our life and the way we see and comprehend the world. Whether for leisure or work, it is important to learn how to `read¿ media products and familiarize ourselves with their frames of reference in order to recognize their underlying meanings, intentions, and effects. Drawing upon feminist media research, we aim to develop tools and materials that will equip students with the necessary skills to successfully navigate today¿s hyper-mediatized world. REFERENCES:
- Pragmatic and discourse analysis: We are interested in the analysis of implicit messages in communication, which has led us to join Lindolenex research group. We have collaborated as an author with others members of Lindolenex that resulted in the publication of two books, Del Razonamiento a la Argumentación. Teoría y práctica de las destrezas discursivas en la nueva sociedad del conocimiento (Peter Lang, 2012), and The Essential Enthymeme. Propositions for Educating Students in a Modern World (Peter Lang, 2015). We have contributed with a chapter for each book that focus on the analysis of the natural inference (the enthymeme) in advertising: "Técnicas argumentativas en el discurso publicitario" (chapter 7, 2012), and "The Process of Reasoning in Advertising" (chapter 8, 2015). Moreover, we have studied this device at a linguistic, rhetorical, and literary level in detective stories, and co-written a chapter with Professor Jorge Juan Vega y Vega titled "The Enthymeme in Detective Novels" (chapter 10, 2015)."Le dit et le vouloir taire dans la publicité de produits dits `sensibles'", Dire : DIversité REcherches et terrains, 9, 76-90. 2017. 6) "Técnicas argumentativas en el discurso publicitario", in Del Razonamiento a la Argumentación: Teoría y Práctica de Las Destrezas Discursivas en la Nueva Sociedad Del Conocimiento, Berne, Peter Lang, 2015We currently work on inference (enthymeme) in Detective Novels. In 2018 I obtained the Master's degree in Language Sciences and in 2022 the PhD in Language Sciences from the Université de Bourgogne (France).
- French and comparative linguistics studies: This field of research studies in depth the history, usage and function of the French verb « être », as well as its etymology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and cognition. Further, we have explored the interlocks between the French verb "être" and the Spanish verbs "ser" and "estar," and compare it to other similar verbs from several Indoeuroepan languages. Some of the most important works on this regard are "Être, ser y estar. Lingüística y ménage à trois" (2006), "Les Natures lexicales du verbe être. Un essai de modélisation verbale" (2009), and "Critères discursifs pour la distinction espagnole Ser / Estar à partir du français Être" (2010). We have also explored its linguistic, philological, and epistemological. Our study has prompted the publication of the book titled: Qu'est-ce que le verbe 'être'? Éléments de morphologie, de syntaxe et de sémantique (Honoré Champion, 2011).
- Linguistics applied to French and comparative literature and its didactics: We have got two PHD: one in French Literature (1995), the other in Linguistics (2022). We have published several essays, among which it is highlighted "Un apport espagnol à la théorie du genre de la nouvelle" (RHR,1999). We have also written a mongraph titled "Fiction et vérité chez les conteurs de la Renaissance en France, Espagne et Italie" (Presses Universitaires de Lyon, 2002). On the same topic, we have also published an essay titled "Hacia una teoría definitiva de la novela corta: Un género que antaño llamaban cuento" (Transitions, 2008). About teaching, see (2017) ¿Atouts et enjeux du cinéma dans l¿enseignement de la littérature¿ (Texte établi avec J. J. Vega y Vega), Dialogues et cultures, nº 63 : Le français, langue ardente. Florilège du XIVe Congrès mondial de la FIPF (2016) 1, pp. 103-116. EME éditions. See below about linguistic application on literature. We focuse the attention on: (2015) "The Enthymeme in Detective Novels", The Essential Enthymeme: propositions for educating students in a modern world / Jorge Juan Vega Vega (ed.) ; with a preface by John T. Gage, Chapter 10, p. 325-367.
- Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition Studies: Researcher: MICHAEL D. HOOD. Whatever profession students become involved in, whether it's science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or business, at some point they will need to make an argument, to substantiate a perspective with good reasons. In fact, one could argue that all knowledge is ultimately an interpretation of facts, and those interpretations, which have been the most persuasive, constitute the substance of the various academic disciplines. All interpretations share three fundamental facts: they occur within a social context of shared concerns and common knowledge, they must of necessity employ a deductive methodology, and that deductive methodology is the enthymeme. The enthymeme embodies a universal process that comes into play anytime someone makes an argument, whether it's at a conference on nuclear physics or at the dinner table. This universal process involves (1) the question at issue, a shared concern by both writer and audience; (2) the assertion, the writer's response to the question at issue; (3) the assumption, the shared basis for argument, drawn from common values, knowledge, and experience; and (4) the because clause or argumentative strategy, which connects the assertion (the writer's stance) to the assumption (what the audience believes). All students should understand and be able to effectively use the components of this dynamic process. From October 14 to 18, 2019 Professor Hood gave a seminar at the Faculty of Philology (ULPGC), whose title is
- Study of Romanesque and Czech languages and literatures: This line of research is particularly focused on the works of José Mauro de Vasconcelos, Hergé, Marcel Proust and the Czech writer Jan Cep.
